Arthritis pain affects around 10 million people in the UK. Often this condition begins when a person is between the ages of 40 and 50, and women can be affected three times more than men. According to the NHS, symptoms include joint pain, limited movement, and warm red skin on the affected joints.
The two most common forms of arthritis in the UK are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Early symptoms of arthritis include morning pain and joint stiffness.
If not managed properly, the condition is known to adversely affect a person’s daily life. Fortunately, there are many drinks that can help reduce painful symptoms and improve your life.
When a person becomes dehydrated, it negatively affects the symptoms of arthritis. Hydration aids many physical functions with well-hydrated cartilage that helps reduce friction between bones.
As a result, the range of motion is simplified. “If you have a magical elixir to drink, it’s water,” said the Arthritis Foundation.
“Hydration is essential for the elimination of toxins from the body and helps fight inflammation. “Good fluid intake helps maintain joint lubrication and prevent gout attacks.
“Drinking water before meals also helps reduce food consumption and promote weight loss.”
Coffee is said to protect against gout symptoms in some patients. Contains polyphenols, antioxidants that help remove free radicals in the body.
The Arthritis Foundation said, “In general, the most common rule of thumb is to drink a moderate amount of coffee. One or two or fewer cups of coffee a day. “Watch out for your caffeine intake and watch out for coffee and espresso drinks filled with whipped cream and smoothies that increase the calorie and sugar content.”
In two large studies, which began in the 1970s, Finnish adults were asked about their medical history, smoking and alcohol habits, and coffee intake.
After 15 years of adult follow-up, the researchers used medical records to determine the number of people with rheumatoid factor or rheumatoid arthritis. Both studies showed a link between the amount of coffee consumed per day and the risk of rheumatoid factor production.
One study also found that people who drank four or more cups of coffee a day were more likely to show signs of rheumatoid arthritis. Caffeine is also said to help increase the effects of fighting physical and mental fatigue commonly found in rheumatoid arthritis.
Tea is one of the most researched beverages for its benefits for arthritis patients. “Green tea, black tea and white tea are rich in polyphenols, a plant-based compound with strong anti-inflammatory properties,” according to the Arthritis Foundation.
“Green tea is generally considered to be the most beneficial because the active ingredient is a polyphenol known as epigallocatechin 3 gallate (EGCG). “There aren’t any large controlled studies on people with arthritis, but studies have shown that it also helps protect cartilage and bones.”
